Flying.... [Jul. 7th, 2005|10:53 pm]

[Current Music |Creed - Higher]

OOooo!!! had a really good time in the air today! haha... flying in the viper warrior (small plane, but not bad name eh?).

Many thanks to Captain Adrian @ SYFC for taking me up on the sightseeing adventure haha... didnt know how small our country was until i went up there. I mean, from the causeway to sentosa is roughly less than 7 minutes by plane... it's THAT small. haha...

The view up there wasn't that great today, i guess because it was quite hazy... hmmm... hopefully my next flight up will be a lot better in terms of visibility haha.. but i had a blast anyway. hopefully i'd have the opportunity to fly privately! haha.. though it can be quite expensive =.=

for those of you who're skeptical about flying, please note that it IS safer than driving. more precautions are taken to teach u to fly than to drive, and there's less to bump into up there. maybe the occasional cloud will make you feel lots of turbulence, but other than that, it's not exactly unsafe. yeap! haha.. flying's sooo fun! and i'm lovin it!

Anyways, pardon the radio silence for the past coupla weeks, haven't been blogging due to certain circumstances which are not convenient for me to put here at this time. no worries.. my comp hasn't died on me, yet.

In any case, hope everyone's doing fine... and looking forward to seeing you gys out there (whoever you are) soon.

3 more days to POP! [Jun. 5th, 2005|12:18 am]
[Current Mood |confusedconfused]
[Current Music |Closing Time - Semisonic]

yeap! 3 more days to the end of BMT life. I know i'll miss it a lot but what the hell... it's going to be a blast leaving Tekong for good (unless kena posted to SISPEC, in which case its damn suay). but nvm! it's fun haha...

It's another bittersweet moment where you know you're looking forward to it but yet again you dread its coming. I know i wanna pass out fast but yet i know that once we do, I won't be able to see my new found friends for a long time yet. OF course, I'll prolly be meeting new ones but still it's not easy to just walk away from friends yeah? especially friends whom you've lived with for the past 9 weeks or so.

I wanna dedicate Closing Time by Semisonic to all those in Falcon Company, Platoon 1. Especially to Section 4. Hope you guys had as much fun as I did. I know i'll miss you all.

(for lyrics, please go to earlier posts. Lazy to post here haha)

Field Camp... + + + [May. 14th, 2005|10:43 pm]
[Current Mood |happyhappy]
[Current Music |let me entertain you - robbie williams]

As promised! I'm back! =)

Field Camp was a blast!!! =) Though i'm sure not everyone will agree with me on this count, i'm sure it's an experience that no one will forget for a long time to come =).

Day 1:
Started on a route march around tekong in full battle order (Field Pack + Webbing + Helmet + Weapon) which lasted for 9km. The march terminated at the rubber tree plantation.

Once on site, we pitched our basha (makeshift tents made out of groundsheets) and got down to work in digging our drainage systems as well as toilets. We also started on our first field lessons and as the day went by, we began to get ourselves acclimatized to out-field training.

Once darkness hit, we performed a ritual known as a powder bath (which is conducted at last light everyday. This is the only time in the day whereby you feel relatively clean so you tend to cherish the powder bath time =)) Basically, you pour liberal quantities of powder all over your sweaty body and you cover every nook and cranny with white powder. Following which you are inspected from head to toe by the sergeants/officers and you are then pronounced clean. If not, you'll do jumping-jacks in your undies and re-powder yourself.

Since we were all so tired after the full day of activities, most of us slept very well at night. Though the ground was rock hard and the environment slightly unpleasant, we all managed to fall asleep once we were in the comfort of our tents.

Day 2:
Day started with the consumption of our breakfast, and at first light, the donning of our camouflage.

One thing about SAF camou is that your complexion after the 7 days out field turns out to be very nice. the skin is smooth, no pimples whatsoever. Girls who need beauty tips, camou yourself before sleep every night. then wake up and remove the camou. it works miracles.

we continued our field lessons until it started to rain, then lightning started striking. we moved into a safer location until it was clear for us to stay in the open. We then conitnued with field training, firing blanks and going through the various drills that we were taught in our practices.

At night, I did sentry duty. It was wonderful! Thank you Platoon Sergeant Lex for the welfare provisions through the hour of duty.

Day 3:
It rained cats and dogs this day... we didnt do much except a turn-out and other non-training related activities. Basically slacked the whole day.

Day 4:
Route march to technical break at a built-up village. Pretty long walk and it had to be tactical too but it made the whole platoon feel like soldiers. to be walking along a track with your rifle looking out for danger and occasionally "contact" enemy formations along the way.

at the technical break, we basically just slacked around and washed up. after the 3 days of field training, the village looked unreal as it was one of the few times we had access to civilisation.

we also had freshly rationed food from the cookhouse being catered specially for us to consume at the technical break. in addition, we were allowed to wash ourselvces with fresh tap water for a few seconds per person. 3 nights of powder bath make fresh water a luxury... and indeed we cherished every second of it

Day 5:
Route march to palm tree plantation. There, we set-up our tentages again and went about digging the drainage system. only problem was, that day my buddy didn't complete his part of the drain. sooo... what happened next was, well, traumatic.

It started to drizzle about 15 minutes after we completed our tentage. then it started to thunder, and then pour. 30 minutes after the initial drizzle, the drainage system we dug was almost spilling over, and my buddy's side was flooding like crazy.

But in spite of the shitty condition that mud water was flowing into our tent, we were quite happy in the sense that we finally didnt need to care so much if we got things dirty or not since everything was getting dirty at the same time. 5 minutes after the flooding, a whole entire team comprised of members of the platoon could be seen "upgrading" their drainage systems. For what good it would do, since most of their tents were being flooded as well.

so what happened in the end was that we all evacuated back to the village and we harboured there for the night. Prior to sleeping, though, we had a night-walk around the forest. It was a new experience for most of hte guys as they have never walked with absolutely no light at all. we could barely see what was in front of our noses, let alone the outstretched fingers on our hands.

Day 6:
Route march to another area of tekong. Ran through another day of drills, and then proceeded on to have lunch.

after lunch, we were issued stores to do something that probably none of us want to ever do again. Trench digging. Digging a hole in the ground that can fit you and your webbing and your field-pack snugly (dimensions are about 2m x 0.7m x 0.7m [l x b x h]) is not something that's easy to accomplish. especially when your only tool available is an entrenching tool which is barely able to make a good drain, let alone a hole.

So on and on we dug for 5 hours, stopping only to eat biscuits and drink water. when nightfall came, we finally were able to rest in the trench that we dug. so i guess it was an effort that we were glad to make.

Day 7:
3 AM -> Thunderstorm.

We had to evacuate our manholes and race for the nearest training shed. all of us cold and tired and hungry, we didnt even have our rations to keep us filled and warm. so we resorted to huddling together to keep warm.

day moved on with a fast march to SI-Spec for our BIC. a simmulated battlefield whereby we crawled through mud and other obstacles before taking on a dummy target in rifle-combat. It was pretty tiring but what the heck... it was the last day of field camp anyway. so Pressed on and managed to finish the course.

With that completed, our field camp was done and we all marched back to company line, singing at the top of our voices and cheering the whole way home.

Reflection:
I guess these 7 days of outfield training has really changed me in many ways. I now appreciate the many simple things in life a whole lot more. Like family, friends, the opportunity to meet up with them, and also the opportunity to shower. even drinking cold water has become such a novelty.

I'm glad i've had the chance to go through the field camp and to those out there who're still skeptical about whether you're able to finish it, just read the above and smile. cos you will definitely accomplish so much more after you've gone through the entire process.

Announcements:
I'm going for SITEST this week, from Mon - Wed. Probably won't be able to reply to you guys between the time that i'm outfield. Next week, long weekend, if u're free, go down to HCI for their drama fest. Going to be a blast =)

Goodnight! =)
